Prologue

Spain, 1568

Twigs cracked as a petite figure moved swiftly through the forest. The dead leaves swirled around her as she walked, dancing around her, as if protecting her. The moon was coming up and over the tree line, a majestic carriage riding up into the autumn sky. She dropped low when she heard a rustling in the bush. Not breathing, she pounced on the bush and succeeded in dragging out a young boy.
“Why were you following me?” she inquired while holding his neck in her hand.
“Pl-please miss have mercy. I was sent by your father to ensure your safety.”
“Like I need protection.” She snarled. “Go back to my father and tell him to leave me alone to do my work.” The woman released him and he was about to scurry away when screams erupted from the direction of the village.
“It’s play time,” chuckled the woman. When she moved out of the shadows and into the moonlight, the boy gasped. Standing before him was a stunningly beautiful lady. She had long, wavy auburn hair and skin so pale that it was almost white. Her dress was made of white silk that deepened into a golden color towards the bottom. An almost transparent white cloth hung from her arms and reached the forest floor like wings. She was also adorned in jewels, mostly diamonds and wore an intricate necklace with beautiful earrings to match.
“You must be freezing!” the boy exclaimed.
“I haven’t felt cold in a long time.” The boy looked into her eyes. They were a light brown. Then slowly, so slowly that the change wasn’t noticeable to someone with an untrained eye for detail, the color changed to a golden yellow. He suddenly realized in horror of what she truly was.
“Oh my god. He transformed you!”
“Surprised?” Before the boy could reply the woman elongated her canine teeth and grabbed the boy, lifting him off the ground with one hand.
“Send my father my regards.” She cackled and bit the boy on his neck. Then the woman whirled around in a circle and transformed into a large, grayish white bat-like creature and flew towards the direction of the village.
The creature transformed back into her gorgeous form and landed gracefully next to an equally handsome man. He was dressed in all black and his jet black hair was held back into a ponytail with a fancy clip. A single gold hoop decorated his left ear. His eyes were brown like the woman next to him. When looking into them, you see nothing but two orbs of light, staring back at you, like he could never be happy again.
“You took longer than expected Katrina.” The man said.
“Forgive me My Lord, a whelp was following me.”
“The other vampires have the village under control. We will go attack the castle and search for the monster in there.”
“We My Lord?”
The man smirked. “Where would I be without my prized jewel?” Without another word, the man transformed into a large, black bat like creature with Katrina following in her form. Silently they landed on the castle floor, changing back to their human forms. Suddenly, a silver stake came down and was plunged into Katrina’s un-beating heart. Shrieking in pain, Katrina pulled out the stake. The man rushed over to see if she was ok.
“What happened? Why didn’t I die master?” Katrina panted.
“I don’t know but thank the Devil that you didn’t.” The man stooped down to pick up Katrina and started to walk around the room, looking for whoever stabbed her.
“Hold it right there. Don’t move,” said a voice that came behind them. The man twirled around and set Katrina on her feet. He looked at the would be assassin and grinned.
“Who do I have the pleasure of meeting?”
“I am the owner of this castle.”
“And what is your name?”
“My name is of no importance.”
“But it is.”
“No it’s not. Who are you?”
“Tell me yours and I will tell you mine.”
“My name is Adam Lucretia.”
“Oh? Is that so?”
“Yes, who are you?” Adam shifted uncomfortably from each foot.
“Don Alejandro Reyes.” He said with a flourish.
“Reyes? As in Don Reyes, the brother of Dracula himself.” Alejandro rolled his eyes.
“Correct but Dracula was killed a long time ago. I have replaced him and am now in the Devil’s good graces.” Reyes mouth slowly crept into a secretive smile that sent shivers down Adam’s spine.
“Who’s the lady you seem to have separation anxieties with?”
“You will not dare to speak to me like that!” Katrina hissed.
“Dear, do not fret. He is just ignorant. This is Doña Katrina, my bride.”
“What’s your name?”
“Katrina. Are you deaf?” She answered. Adam stood stunned, staring at her.
“You don’t remember?” asked the man.
“Remember what?” The man stood dumbfounded in disbelief.
“Never mind…I must be mistaking you for someone else.” Katrina bared her fangs.
“Go search for her. I will meet you at the castle later.” Alejandro ordered Katrina. She smiled coyly at Adam.
“But master I want to kill him.”
“Go.”
“As you wish.”
“My wife is not here. Did you really think I would leave her prey to you?” smirked Adam. “Maria is mine!” Alejandro snarled. Suddenly, he leaped through the door leaving an orb like object behind him. The room was filled with a bright light, five times the intensity of the sun. Alejandro leapt towards Katrina and covered her with his cloak. As soon as it began, it was over. Adam was gone. Reyes looked out the window after being sure that Katrina was safe. None of the vampires outside had survived.
“What the devil was that?” gasped the Countess.
“I don’t know. Come Katrina, I feel a force working against us. We must go into hiding until the time is right. Then, my queen, we will cover the earth in darkness.”
“What of her? I need a companion and you need a new bride.”
“She has escaped, for now.” Wailing, Katrina leaned against Alejandro and he carried her back to Castle Reyes to wait, and wait. It didn’t seem that long for them. After all, they had an eternity to live.
