Chapter 1
Spain, Present Day
Katrina’s eyes snapped open. She stretched and jumped down from the ceiling to stand by a coffin. “Master,” she whispered into Alejandro’s ear. Gently she shook him until he awoke. “Wha-What happened? How long did we sleep?” he yawned. Katrina glided over to the window of their castle. “It is hard to tell My Lord, but I am hungry. May we feed?” Without a word, Reyes morphed into his hell beast form and flew out the window with Katrina following closely behind. As they were about to swoop onto the village they normally fed at, they stopped abruptly and gasped. Before them, they saw large metal creatures that were being controlled by humans from the inside, industrial shops, and women strolling around in...breeches?
“I think we should hold off on the feeding don’t you think, Katrina?”
“Yes,” she stuttered wide eyed.
Katrina and Reyes flew back to Castle Reyes.
“Master what is going on? I don’t understand. And I still do not know why I didn’t die when the stake pierced my heart,” she gushed.
“Hush, my pet. I will get to the bottom of this. Satan seems to have been playing a large role in this. Maybe it is the time we have been waiting for, maybe this is the time for Darkness to rule. Come on let us rest. I will try to contact Satan tonight. In the meantime we should conduct some tests in which we test how long your defenses will stand against holy objects.”
“Yes My Lord.”
That night, Reyes dreamt of evil, of his father…
He was in a large, dark room, completely cold though there was a fire burning in the hearth. Cold fire, his father’s specialty, he mused to himself. Everything was frozen over. Icicles were hanging from the ceiling, like frozen daggers ready to plunge. The doors banged open and in strode a young handsome man with blue eyes and long, sweeping, blonde hair. He teleported right in front of Reyes and smirked.
“Son, you have slept a long time.”
“I don’t understand how all this could have happened.”
“You slept for 440 years. Things change. The metal creatures are cars. I will input all this information into your mind and Katrina’s. You will be given new clothes as well and Katrina will be immune to the sun as you already are.”
“Thank you father but I was wondering why Katrina hasn’t died. We have been running experiments and she hasn’t died like she should have. ”
“I do not know, but I would be cautious around her. She seems to be protected, not only by me but by God,” he spat out the name and the icicles shook.
“What? That is impossible. She has been condemned ever since I bit her.”
“Oh yes, another thing, Katrina will soon have a child. Your son. A prince of Darkness.”
“But that’s impossible.”
“The child will be born in America.”
“Why there?”
“Just do it. I’ll answer your questions in due time.”
“Fine. Is Dracula here?” As if on cue, a man nearly identical to Alejandro walked in.
“Hello brother. Did you miss me?”
“I would just like to let you know, that I will have a son.”
“So I’ve heard,” Dracula sneered.
“If I remember, none of your brides succeeded in giving you an heir.” Dracula bared his teeth.
"Katrina was supposed to have been mine and you stole her away from me!"
“Enough,” the devil said. “Remember what you were sent to do. Wreak havoc and destroy all good. Now go. Rest easy and heed my warning of Katrina.”
Reyes awoke and looked at Katrina. She looked peaceful in slumber. Her auburn waves tumbled down, cascading past her shoulders, framing her face. Smiling to himself he recalled when he made her one of his kind. He had been a vampire for only 20 years. Reyes remembered seeing her dancing, her hair tangling as she danced. It was a very popular, wild, new dance in Spain. Her blood had called out to him, singing, making him dance to an unknown tune that made him want to fly, to soar above. He slowly approached her, as if in a dream. He took her out of the other man’s arms and started to waltz with her. That was the first time his icy heart had melted. In that instant, he knew that she would be his no matter what.
Awaking from the memory, he inhaled her scent, closed his eyes and remembered what Satan told him. His eyes popped open. He is going to have a son, someone to rule beside him and make people suffer, as he had. He glanced at Katrina’s face again. He got up and looked out of the window. The luminescent moon started to go down behind the mountains, casting silvery silk across the woods and lake. He punched through the glass of the window, jumped and elegantly landed three stories below in the middle of a lush garden. Alejandro didn’t stop to admire the surrounding beauty. Instead, he changed into his bat like form and flew to a nearby mountain overlooking the sleeping town. He sat there for a few minutes, contemplating his history.
He decided to fly down towards the town to feed. Alejandro knew that he should have taken Katrina with him, but he needed to be by himself. Leaning in the dark alley he waited for a drunken man to move closer to him. “Wait,” he scoffed. That’s all he ever did. He waited to get revenge on the French, to defy his father, to get Katrina, to have a son, to rule the world. So original, he thought. Who doesn’t want to rule the world?
The man was now directly in front of him. “Do you have any liquor on you?” he slurred. Reyes didn’t give him the decency of an answer. He leaned in and bit him, sucking the man dry. When he was finished, he walked through the quiet town, looking into the shops he passed. Alejandro went back to the dark alley and transformed into his hell-beast form. Growling, he flew through the forest and up towards the moon. He descended onto the balcony connecting to the room where he and Katrina slept. Her relaxed face was now scrunched up as if she was having a nightmare. That is when he realized. Vampires aren’t supposed to have dreams. Far away he heard hellish laughter ring out in triumphant music.
